RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Federal wildlife officials are investigating the shooting death of an endangered red wolf in Hyde County.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spokesman Tom MacKenzie said Friday a recent necropsy shows the wolf found last November had died of a gunshot.
It’s generally illegal to shoot the wolves. Federal officials are offering a reward for information about this death.
Wildlife Service statistics show that 17 wolves died last year. The wild population is estimated to be 45 to 60 wolves.
The only wild population of the wolves is in eastern North Carolina.
The federal government has been studying whether to continue, modify or end the reintroduction program for the wolves.
The program’s future has prompted intense debate, including a lawsuit accusing the federal government of failing to protect the dwindling population.

So before you bible thumpers start quoting me song and verse I’ll give it to you; “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” Genesis 1:26
I am tired of hearing this fairy tale, I am tired of humans, the most dangerous creature roaming this planet, destroying everything within arms reach. Ladies and gentleman we are guest here, our mortality proves it. We don’t have dominion or rights over anything. Mother Nature kicks our ass on a regular basis and she will continue to do so for the duration of our short visit here.
We don’t have the right to consume or waste the resources offered, but we do. We don’t have the right to randomly kill or execute animals, but we do. We don’t have the right to poison the atmosphere, the air we breathe, the water we drink, but we do. We do because we think we have some God-given right to do so, all because we walk upright and have thumbs, thumbs we use to thump verses, fairy tales, that validate to many wrongs and not enough rights.
Maybe one red wolf doesn’t seem to be that big of deal, but tell that to the Passenger Pigeon, the Great Auk, the Tasmanian Tiger, the Baiji White Dolphin, Stellers Sea Cow, or the West African Black Rhino. Sorry you can’t because these creatures have been wiped off the face of the earth. Is that what God had in mind?
Some Supreme Being or all-powerful and knowing Deity isn’t going to destroy this planet, if we aren’t careful we will take care of that. Let’s figure out, soon, how we can have a different ending to this story before it’s to late.
