So where do we go from here?

“You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.” –  Mahatma Gandhi

“Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love; this is the eternal rule.”-  Buddha

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” –  Martin Luther King, Jr.

Eye for Eye

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

Love for Enemies

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” – Matthew 5:38-48

We all know the words, we have all read the quotes, study the texts, heard the lessons, read the book. Hate does not resolve hate, killing does not resolve killing, evil does not resolve evil. So where do we go from here?

I don’t know. My heart hurts. My heart hurts as a father as I watched parent’s who didn’t know if their children were alive or dead. My heart hurts as a friend as I watched people embrace in shock offering the only comfort they could provide. My heart hurts as a citizen of this world, because I don’t have any answers, I don’t have any solutions, I can’t make this better. So where do we go from here?

Do we build a giant wall? Do we close our borders? Do we arm ourselves with guns and pistols? Do we decide who belongs on our soil, and kick the rest out? Do we drop bombs on the people and countries we “think” are behind this evil? So where do we go from here? Where do we go from here?

About ends and beginnings blog

I am a frustrated writer and poet waiting to be discovered. A stand-up philosopher performing on a street corner near you. A Christian with questions but I don’t want to hear your answers. A Buddhist with a bumper sticker on my truck to prove it. A collector of quotes. A grower of lettuce. The Patron Saint of earthworms who name their children after me. A cyclist whose big ass strains the seams of his Lycra bibs. I am American by birth, Southern by the grace of God. My goal in life is to leave an imprint on the lives of the people I love not a footprint on the earth. I am a son, a husband, a father composed of 65%-Oxygen, 18%-Carbon, 10%-Hydrogen, 3%-Nitrogen, 3%-Diet Coke and 1%-Oreo.

I have no words to answer those questions… it’s sad that the actions of a person makes us have to ask these questions.

Lean on each other, comfort each other, keep sharing this is not ok, keep fighting, never lose hope….there’s is so much we still can do…We have to, for the children and their children.
