I do this blogging thing for a couple of reasons. One, I like to write. It is a good outlet for me since I can’t paint or draw and I fancy myself a creative person. I don’t think that I am a particularly good writer but I do enjoy the process and occasionally I put together a sentence or two that even I am proud of. Second, ego, I like getting feedback, either praise or scorn, it doesn’t really matter. I like being read. It validates the time, energy and effort I put into crafting these post.
So here is the thing, over the last couple of weeks or so my daily “views” have gone from highs of 170 and 150 to 80’s and 60’s and now over the last couple of days to the 50 and 30 range. Now hear me out before you start giving me a load of shit about how you would be happy with those kind of views, or that if I am blogging for “numbers” I am doing it for all the wrong reasons (remember I shared my reasons). I am simply wondering why. Has my writing changed? Have my topics changed? Am I promising one thing and delivering another? Or maybe my topics haven’t changed enough, if you have read one of my post you have read them all. Do I post too much, absences makes the heart grow fonder? Are they too long, beyond the attention span of the average person? Or can I chalk it up to the season? Summer time, vacations, busy with the kids, having fun outdoors? Remember I am new to this, less than four months. All you pro’s out there who have been blogging for years know the ups and downs, share some of that wisdom with a needy blogger.
I make no bones about it, the feedback, the views keep me going. It creates a flow of thought and ideas that excite me to put something together, something that you might enjoy reading, something that makes you think or maybe even pisses you off. I am shallow like that, remember point two-ego.
If you have a thought or an opinion on why my views have dropped I would love to hear it. If you have personally moved on to bigger and brighter bloggers or maybe my “newness” has worn off and you just don’t want to hurt my feelings by clicking the unfollow button, I would love to know that too. What do you think, to quote the Clash “Should I stay or should I go”?
“I think blogging is a muscle that most people wear out.” – Warren Ellis
I find on the weekends my numbers are very low and during the week, as long as I to make an effort my numbers go up. I too do this because I read a lot and want to spreed the word on what I enjoy so maybe some readers might enjoy some of the indie Authors I read that they may not come across! I hope this makes sense!

I notice the days I interact with a lot of other blogs are days I get more views because most people will return the favor if you’re reading and commenting on their posts. Something to try at least if your numbers are dropping. Mine also drop if I don’t post for awhile, but I think that’s a more obvious problem.

Sorry to hear your numbers are dropping. I’m new to this blogging thing as well, so I don’t have much to say about why there are fewer views than before, but as a reader of your blog and a follower, I can say that you write quality posts. They always keep me thinking and give me a different perspective on issues that I either don’t think about that much or think about often but rarely do anything about. Your post on mindfulness and the importance of being aware of how we get our mass produced factory made products like sneakers still has me thinking about my place and my responsibilities as a being on this crazy planet we call home. My husband and I had a great discussion about the value of human life after I read your piece on whether or not humans matter. I’ve enjoyed every post you’ve published since I started following your blog. I hope you will keep writing and not get too discouraged by the low numbers. I certainly look forward to reading more of your witty and insightful posts. Best of luck!

Thank you, thank you! That makes me feel very good that I was able to start the wheels turning for someone.

I have just started blogging too. I have not looked at the numbers because I just started. Well your experience will prepare me for what is in the future. However, don’t be discouraged, people will always read you, though not everyone will.

STAY.
Since I went ‘international’ I’ve gotten more followers/reader…therefor I also read more and more posts of others. I can’t keep up.
For me personally, it’s not the quality of your posts, it’s due to lack of time.
Again..
STAY

I understand how you feel. I think it’s great you asked about it. I have little advice as I am surely no guru. Lol. But, I can say for me, I am swamped and easily overwhelmed by the amount of reading I can’t get to. But, I really appreciate your thpught provokers. 🙂

Social media is a fickle thing. I have used it for my business, and there are actual stats on how to get your post seen. For one, it matters what time of day you post. Some information available for timing at this site: http://coschedule.com/blog/best-time-to-publish-a-blog-post/
You will also notice ups and downs with readership, as readers will usually follow a blog for awhile and then jump to others (due to the amount out there) During the transition, you will start to get new readers, but there is sometimes a lull between.
You are correct that time of years affects your views. Vacations, nice weather, kids out of school and so on.
I am not an expert by far, but I have done my research on when and how to reach a target audience. This goes for blog posts as well.
I personally enjoy reading your posts. I don’t always get to read them all, but I usually read at least 4 a week.
Sorry for the long comment, but I hope this helps.

Stay. As long as even one person reads what you write that’s reason enough. Stay.

My views seem to be very dependent on the tags I use. “Beatles” and “Buddhism” always do well for me.

I will keep that in mind, two of my favorite B words.

I’ve discovered that there is a direct correlation between the amount of interaction and the number of views received. The more I visit and participate on other blogs, the more visitors and participants I receive on mine. And of course tags are very important.

Yea, trying to figure the tag thing out. I had 220 views Friday with one post and 47 yesterday with two. Hell who knows what the magic mix is. Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts.

I’m not sure I’ve figured out the mix. I try to use a combination of general with more specific tags, but I’d guess there’s much room for improvement. 🙂
