A Poem: Happy Anniversary

I held your hand tight on that first day of school

The little girl that filled our circle with life and love

Sharing you for the first time with a world beyond our door

Who knew what magic would unfold in those years later

Crayons, glitter and glue turning paper plates into treasures

Simple moments of peanut butter and jelly and Spaghettios

Cutting the crust off the bread, and reading Goodnight Moon before bed

A VHS of Barney, and the purple songs we sang in our sleep

And now a year has past, the anniversary of a union

Between a man and the woman I still call my little girl

One year of accepting that there is another ahead of me

A husband whose needs you share, building a life together

Unions create circles, and in time circles fill with the joy of life

And you too will tell the story, in that magic moment

When you held a hand tight on the first day of school

An original composition by the author of Ends and Beginnings

About ends and beginnings blog

I am a frustrated writer and poet waiting to be discovered. A stand-up philosopher performing on a street corner near you. A Christian with questions but I don’t want to hear your answers. A Buddhist with a bumper sticker on my truck to prove it. A collector of quotes. A grower of lettuce. The Patron Saint of earthworms who name their children after me. A cyclist whose big ass strains the seams of his Lycra bibs. I am American by birth, Southern by the grace of God. My goal in life is to leave an imprint on the lives of the people I love not a footprint on the earth. I am a son, a husband, a father composed of 65%-Oxygen, 18%-Carbon, 10%-Hydrogen, 3%-Nitrogen, 3%-Diet Coke and 1%-Oreo.
