A Poem: A Box of Christmas Memories

A tree stands in a room filled with lights and trinkets of the past

Ornaments on display refresh our memory of glitter and glue

Gifts of first graders proudly offered to mothers everywhere

Intermingled with shiny objects collected at vacation gift shops

Trips and travel that remind us of the busy years of children

This timeline fills my spirit of Christmases old and Holidays new

Stored in a box and released once a year from their bondage of dust

Thirty days of memories, thirty days of evergreen and candles

Sugar cookies, and cinnamon, the rich smells of Christmas

And at the stroke of midnight the year fades, and the tree crumbles

Needles fall on the empty skirt where presents once laid

The lights come down, and the memories are wrapped in tissue

Stored in their boxes in a cold attic for their dusty slumber

We will wait for the leaves to fall, and eleven months to pass

Another year concluded, birthdays celebrated, seasons behind us

Then the search begins, high on a mountain in the cold and mud

For a new tree to fill our room with lights and trinkets of the past

About ends and beginnings blog

I am a frustrated writer and poet waiting to be discovered. A stand-up philosopher performing on a street corner near you. A Christian with questions but I don’t want to hear your answers. A Buddhist with a bumper sticker on my truck to prove it. A collector of quotes. A grower of lettuce. The Patron Saint of earthworms who name their children after me. A cyclist whose big ass strains the seams of his Lycra bibs. I am American by birth, Southern by the grace of God. My goal in life is to leave an imprint on the lives of the people I love not a footprint on the earth. I am a son, a husband, a father composed of 65%-Oxygen, 18%-Carbon, 10%-Hydrogen, 3%-Nitrogen, 3%-Diet Coke and 1%-Oreo.
