Deplorables hate Guacamole

“Simply put, any policy proposal which drives up costs of Corona, tequila, or margaritas is a big-time bad idea. Mucho Sad.” – Senator Lindsey Graham, Twitter 1-26-17

How did the refrain go? Oh yea, “Build that wall, build that wall!” and who is going to pay for it “Mexico!” Well it appears that one of the many options in the Trump Administrations “buffet” (their word not mine) of options is a tariff, though we aren’t going to call it a tariff, on products imported from Mexico and consumed by you and me.

So what does that mean? It means that American consumers could be paying more for cars, electronics, clothes, appliances, fruits and vegetables, Corona, tequila and Guacamole (avocados). What else does it mean? That Mexico won’t be paying for the wall, we will. What else, what else does it mean, we better build the wall quickly because once this, not a tariff, grabs the Mexican economy there will be a flood, a mass exodus, of Mexican citizens coming across the border trying to simply survive.

Mexico is our third largest trade partner. Do we have a trade deficit with Mexico? Yes. Is that Mexico’s fault? No, it our fault, the American consumer’s fault, Wal-Mart’s fault, Targets fault. As I have written before, Americans like cheap stuff. We will pay twenty dollars for a pair of shoes that might last six months rather than paying hundred dollars for a pair that could last us five years if we get them resoled. We are a disposable economy and Mexico and China are more than happy to feed our insatiable need for more and more cheap stuff.

Certainly there are imbalances in our corporate tax structure that makes it advantageous for American companies to manufacture and export products from foreign countries. But that is a fix that needs to be corrected on our end not on Mexico’s side. Our President knows this. Remember this is the man who sells an expensive line of suits, ties and shirts called the Donald J. Trump Collection that is not made in America but, wait for it, Mexico and China.

I guess deplorables hate Guacamole and Margaritas. I don’t know where they live but in my neck of the woods there is a Mexican restaurant seemingly on every corner that is always packed to the gills. I guess only us liberals are eating Guacamole and chips and ordering a #10, three Beef Tacos, Rice and Beans.

“We’re going to build a wall and Mexico is going to pay. And the reason they’re going to pay and the way they’re going to pay, Bob, is this. We have a trade deficit now with Mexico of $58 billion a year. The wall is going to cost $10 billion a year. That’s what it’s going to cost. It’s going to be a powerful wall. It’s going to cost $10 billion.” – Donald Trump

And an update; this guy sure keeps his thumbs busy; “Mexico has taken advantage of the U.S. for long enough. Massive trade deficits & little help on the very weak border must change, NOW!” – Donald Trump Tweet 1-27-17 just two hours ago. I don’t know what your image is of the citizens of Mexico but they don’t strike fear in my heart like say Vladimir Putin does.

The guy that brings me my #10 just doesn’t scare me, but our President needed a boogeyman and a cause, a thunderbolt of fear in the hearts of his converts. So what does he do? He blames Juan. Juan never hurt anybody. He is just trying to feed and take care of his family like any other father would. Juan isn’t a terrorist, he isn’t a member of ISIS, and he isn’t smuggling drugs. Juan is a hard worker, doing the jobs that many of us won’t do or think are below our pay grade. America needs Juan as much as Juan needs us. Think about it.

What??? My margaritas are going to cost more?!!? Unthinkable! I’m totally against this wall!

    • “I have great relationships with the Mexican people. You’ve been seeing I’m winning every single poll in these primaries when they go out, when the polls come back in with the Hispanics. I have thousands of Hispanics that work for me and over the years tens of thousands that have worked for me over the years. I will tell you that the problem our country has is that our leaders are so weak – we have so many ways of getting the money to build the wall.” – DJT

  4. Someone needs to inform Mr. Trump that our nation is a member of the World Trade Organization. Our membership dates back to its predecessor organiation in 1948. What he wants to do would violate the terms of our membership. I hope he starts learning the job soon.
