“Laws alone cannot secure freedom of expression; in order that every man present his views without penalty there must be spirit of tolerance in the entire population.” – Albert Einstein
The “letters to the editor” in my local paper have not been very uplifting. The tone has been adversarial, with the common theme being that “liberals”, both individuals and the media, have ruined this country. Suggestions of corrective action for those of us concerned about the direction we are headed have included to leave, with rides being offered to the airport, to quit whining and simply shut-up, and my favorite, to read the Bible and realize that President Obama was the beast and that President Trump is clearing a path for our Savior.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. – First Amendment, U. S. Constitution
Religion: President Trump, in his first week on the job has assaulted and trampled over the First Amendment. He contends that his travel ban on certain Muslim-majority nations is not a religious ban on Muslims. But the line between his executive order and reality is pretty clear as the press has pointed out. Yes, at the end of the day it is religious discrimination plain and simple. He can wrap it up with a pretty bow and call it protection but I see it for what it is and I am glad many others do as well.
“Christians in the Middle-East have been executed in large numbers. We cannot allow this horror to continue!” – Donald Trump Tweet 1-29-17
Speech: Ordinary citizens and politicians have spoken out about this ban. They see it, as I do, as a way for President Trump to flex his authority without the check and balances which are inherent in the democratic process. Their concern and their words have been met with backlash from Trump and his talking heads even to go so far as accusing Senator Schumer as faking his tears. The President’s actions have placed our representatives in both the house and the senate with their backs up against the wall. These individuals operate by keeping one eye on the business at hand and the other on reelection. Trump is making them pick which one is more important to them and sadly, for our Republican delegates up for reelection in two years, I know which one they will choose.
“Only 109 people out of 325,000 were detained and held for questioning. Big problems at airports were caused by Delta computer outage, protesters and the tears of Senator Schumer. Secretary Kelly said that all is going well with very few problems. MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN!”- Donald Trump Tweet 1-30-17
Press: As I stated in a previous post, I get the sense that the modus operandi of this administration will be information overload, misdirection and baffle them with bullshit. This flurry of executive orders confirms this for me. We, the average citizen, need the press now more than ever as our watchdog to protect the interest of the American people. President Trump states that he is looking for fair and unbiased reporting. He uses as his example Fox News as the stalwart of a media outlet with those credentials. He considers all other news outlets and sources as fake news with a liberal bias. We need to do everything within our power to support our “fake news” sources. It may be the only thing that saves and protects us.
“Somebody with aptitude and conviction should buy the FAKE NEWS and failing @nytimes and either run it correctly or let it fold with dignity!” – Donald Trump Tweet 1-29-17
Assemble: Since his election there have multiple assemblies and protest. I honestly cannot think of another President who has met this level of pushback in such a short period (one week) of time. For me, it speaks volumes about the man himself and what he stands for. My hope is that these assemblies and protest, which I predict will be monthly occurrences, won’t be met with or turn violent. “Peaceably” is the operative word here and nothing would validate the actions of our President more than the opportunity for him to call the National Guard to protect his Tweets.
“Watched protests yesterday but was under the impression that we just had an election! Why didn’t these people vote? Celebs hurt cause badly.”- Donald Trump Tweet 1-22-17
