Trump’s popularity contest

“Any negative polls are fake news, just like the CNN, ABC, NBC polls in the election. Sorry, people want border security and extreme vetting.” & “I call my own shots, largely based on an accumulation of data, and everyone knows it. Some FAKE NEWS media, in order to marginalize, lies!” –Donald J. Trump tweets 2-6-17

Many years ago a successful businessman in my community was getting some pressure from his peers to run for City Council. These guys were convinced that Dan, given his outstanding name recognition and reputation would win in a landslide against the incumbent.

The incumbent was a nasty politician who, over the course of twenty years, had beaten down all previous challengers with negative tactics, rumors and ads. He treated his position on Council with all the reverence, prestige and ego that one would give a seat in congress. He didn’t care whose feelings he hurt or whose toes he stepped on. He was a big fish in a very small pond and he had gone to great, nasty lengths in twenty years to maintain his seat.

Before Dan could even announce his candidacy the incumbent took an offensive action spreading a rumor that Dan’s business was suffering and that he may have to file for bankruptcy. Those of us that knew Dan knew this rumor was false, in fact, Dan and his business were having a spectacular year. But part of Dan’s success was due in large part to his cheerleading style of doing business. He didn’t want to make anyone mad, and he wanted everyone to like him. He thrived on being popular. This was his number one guiding principle, people do business with people they like. Hell in thirty years he never personally fired anyone that I know of. He just couldn’t do it. Having just one person not like him, to not think he was the greatest person in the world would have been a crushing blow to his ego.

So as quick as it began it Dan withdrew his name from consideration and the incumbent ran unopposed.

In a recent New York Times article, a portrait is being painted of a man in the White House feeling very isolated from his adoring fans and supporters, the people who validate his bold moves and ego. And though he brushes off the protesters and lashes out at the media these negatives are having a profound affect on his self-confidence and if Donald Trump is selling anything to his deplorables it is self-confidence.

“The failing @nytimes writes total fiction concerning me. They have gotten it wrong for two years, and now are making up stories & sources!” – Donald J. Trump tweets 2-6-17

Our President needs to be validated. His ego feeds on it. His actions and words are built on it. For most of us, simply having our spouse or kids tolerate us is enough validation. But our President needs more, dump truck loads of more, golden skyscrapers of more and right now, he ain’t getting it.

The media is having a field day reporting on all the internal turmoil and psychologist are licking their lips profiling a man with such a fragile ego. It appears the administrations dam has many leaks that our President can’t seem to contain and certainly we can expect more. His “circle of trust” is a small group that will continue to shrink over the coming months as his poll numbers, his validation, continue to plummet. I would expect he does another “victory lap”  in the coming weeks to meet with his adoring fans, pump-up his ego and sell more red hats. Remember, you read about it here first.
