“Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my “wires tapped” in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!” – Donald J. Trump Tweet, 3:45 am, 3-4-17

“Is it legal for a sitting President to be “wire tapping” a race for president prior to an election? Turned down by court earlier. A NEW LOW!” – Donald J. Trump Tweet, 3:49 am, 3-4-17

“I’d bet a good lawyer could make a great case out of the fact that President Obama was tapping my phones in October, just prior to Election!” – Donald J. Trump Tweet, 3:52 am, 3-4-17

“How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!”- Donald J. Trump Tweet, 4:02 am, 3-4-17

What is the source of all this tantalizing and credible information: Breitbart News. Do you think President Bannon had hand in this?

But the real news from our President this weekend?

“Arnold Schwarzenegger isn’t voluntarily leaving the Apprentice, he was fired by his bad (pathetic) ratings, not by me. Sad end to great show”- Donald J. Trump Tweet, 5:19 am, 3-4-17

Making my rounds on blogs I frequent yesterday and today, this is a real hot topic for anyone tethered to discernible reality. But you know what? Check out any Twitter thread or Facebook post or comments section of any right-wing ‘news’ source of your choice and you’ll find legions of people who lap up Trump’s fact-free accusations like they’re gospel.

At the risk of sounding like an unrepentant pessimist, no amount of fact-checking is going to change these people’s minds. And unlike commentators who believe Trump’s failure to deliver palpable improvements to his supporters’ lives will drive them from him, I really think that he and his acolytes in right-wing media can continue to blame anything and everything on Obama and the Democrats and get away with it. These people are living in a parallel universe of paranoid conspiracy theories. They’re not going to give it up because of a few articles in the New York Times—they’re committed to a worldview.

There’s no particular reason for me to leave this comment on this blog—just that after seeing so many posts on this topic that only address Trump’s fantasy world and not the people who prop him up, well. The problem is a lot bigger than we realize.

  2. Your first four examples are part of a six tweet “storm” he sent out during a 36-minute period. The last one is from an hour and 17 minutes later. That must be the amount of time comprising his attention span.

    Yup! “Real” news indeed.

Personally, I’m happy that Arnold is leaving The Apprentice. Not because I dislike him, but HOPEFULLY, it won’t be renewed and tRump won’t get to “glory” in it … or collect $$$ for being an “Executive Producer.”

The Breitbart story links to this at National Review:
It’s a very round-about way of getting to Trump’s allegations, and still dependent on a lot of speculation — about the contents of secret affidavits and warrants.

  7. Can you say “deflection”? Anything to draw attention from how much he’s f#####g up.
