Was Jesus a Liberal or Conservative

I was sitting in Church Sunday listening to our minister lay the ground work for his upcoming Easter sermon. I attend what many in my community view as a liberal Church. We were one of the first Churches in our city to have a female minister and women on our board of elders. We support the ordination of LGBTQ ministers and have a gay person on our session. I view this as progressive but many of the more “conservative” churches in our area view us a heretics and I know have openly prayed for us to right our wrongs.

As it always happens during the sermon my mind began to wonder as I doodled on the cover of the bulletin. I have been thinking a lot about what is dividing this country, these labels we are so insistent on using, Republican and Democrat, Liberals and Conservatives. And if that wasn’t enough, within each of these categories are more labels, ultra, progressives and moderates.

I hate to throw religion into the political mix but in the life of the Christian Church they are coming up on a very big event, the Super Bowl of Christianity if you will. No matter what you think about all the other stories and myths that surround Jesus, if you consider yourself a “Christian” His death and Resurrection is the biggie, the one decree you better not only believe in but grasp as well.

So for all you Jesus followers out there I thought I would list a few of the subjects and the differing views of Liberals and Conservatives on those subjects we are currently battling over. Here is my question, which side would Jesus take and why?

Really think about this. Don’t just pull a response out of your but as so many on the right and left are prone to do. Where would Jesus stand on Abortion, Affirmative Action, the Economy, Education, Energy, Global Warming and Gun Control?

Abortion

Liberal – A woman has the right to decide what happens with her body. A fetus is not a human life, so it does not have separate individual rights.

Conservative – Human life begins at conception. Abortion is the murder of a human being.

Affirmative Action

Liberal – Due to racism in the past, minorities were deprived of the same education and employment opportunities as whites. America is still a racist society, therefore a federal affirmative action law is necessary.

Conservative – Some individuals in society are racist, but American society as a whole is not. Preferential treatment of certain races through affirmative action is wrong.

Economy

Liberal – A market system in which government regulates the economy is best.  Government must protect citizens from the greed of big business.

Conservative – The free market system, competitive capitalism, and private enterprise create the greatest opportunity and the highest standard of living for all.

Education

Liberal –Public schools are the best way to educate students. Vouchers take money away from public schools.

Conservative – School vouchers create competition and therefore encourage schools to improve performance.

Energy

Liberal – Oil is a depleting resource. Other sources of energy must be explored.

Conservative – Oil, gas and coal are all good sources of energy and are abundant in the U.S.

Global Warming/Climate Change

Liberal – Global warming is caused by an increased production of carbon dioxide through the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas).

Conservative – Change in global temperature is natural over long periods of time. Science has not shown that humans can affect permanent change to the earth’s temperature.

Gun Control

Liberal – The Second Amendment does not give citizens the right to keep and bear arms, but only allows for the state to keep a militia (National Guard).

Conservative – The Second Amendment gives citizens the right to keep and bear arms.  Individuals have the right to defend themselves.

Many of you view Jesus as a religious leader, I on the other hand view Jesus as a social activist. Sadly, that view is part of the divide between us. Same book, stories, and lessons but a much different interruption. Sound familiar?

“’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” – Jesus

At the risk of taking a simplistic, easy out, the Jesus I hold as role model is neither liberal nor conservative, but rather analyses each issue from a Gospel perspective — that has no truck with ideology of any nature whatsoever. From that POV, some sides to some issues just don’t matter. And we’d have a lot less acrimony if folk understood that.

  3. Just a different perception. None of this really matters. It is just details. The end is you are being made into the image of God. Jesus is you. God is unconditional love and he inside you, he is your imagination. Example, Hillary imagined she could not lose thereby imaging losing and Donald imagined he was the winner imagining congrats on winning. You get what you ask for. They both got what they asked for. The Bible is an allegory as stated by Paul. The Law is imagination creates reality. Use it to help yourself and others and the Promise will come. I belong to no religion. I do believe the Bible is a spiritual and scientific book. I believe Jesus, which means God Saves. Moses means to draw out. A bush that does not burn comes straight out of imagination. I AM imagination, I AM awareness of being. When perceived in this manner the book comes alive. “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Love your imagination with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Love your neighbor as you would yourself. The Law, imagination creates reality, and the Prophets, who can prophesy if they know what is being imagined, hang on this knowledge. You don’t want to harm you so do not imagine harming another, they are you. Every time you imagine ill of another it doesn’t hurt them, it hurts you. God is unconditional love that means He does not judge. God is on all sides. There is only one actor here and his name is I AM. We all say it. Anything after that is a label. We are the Elohim, many gods making one. If you believe in the worst of men then that is what you will get in your world. It is whatever you believe, imagine and tell yourself. Past + Present = Future. If you don’t want a baby, then tell it you can’t have it and while you love it you can’t afford it and you will miscarry. Love that man with the gun and he will walk away. Global warming does not exist unless you want to experience that. If you believe in it, getting hotter or colder, then that is what you will get. If you believe there is not enough oil then there won’t be enough oil in your world. Some wouldn’t not believe that and look at us, drowning in the stuff. If you believe it hurts the planet the planet will show you that. There are no facts. They change all the time. Peak oil is dead and gone. We are drowning in it. It’s just a state of consciousness, a label. Lose the label and no prejudice exists. No racism. For you. That label is just a trinket you put on. You don’t have to look at it. You choose to do so. You can’t manage imagination. LOL Man tries but he always fails. The Bible is the story of you and your journey. It is the story of the Law, how to use it, and the Promise that follows. You are spiritual being having a human experience not a human seeking a spiritual experience. Part of the problem is, conservatives and liberals view the basic issue differently. Abortion is a prime example. Liberals see the issue as a right to choose, Conservatives see it as a right to life. You’re arguing not from opposing sides of the fence, but from different fences. That’s only one issue, and I don’t want to get bogged down in an argument about abortion. But it isn’t just a matter of taking sides. Your whole world view is different.

Jesus was a radical activist Republican. Did He not preach render unto Caesar, what is Caesar’s?
He threw the moneylenders out of the Temple and he defied the Pharisees.
My guess is that He would condemn abortion, praise the sensible and creative use of natural resources, respect soldiers, require a protected economy, prioritise education and abhor the unforgiving nature of the current political divide.

  7. The Easter bunny laying chocolate eggs is easier to believe than the resurrection. By the way, you all are wrong. Jesus would be a Trump man. If y’all remember your Bible stories, Jesus drove the demons out of the possessed man, changed them into pigs which then hurled themselves over the cliff to awaiting deaths. Just sounds so freakishly like Jesus and Trump working out some problems here. Question I have is this: is Trump the demon possessed man or is Trump the pig? Maybe both? Jesus does work miracles, you know.
Back to the resurrection….Jesus is my main man and we walk every year about this time to that cross of ego crucifixion and spirit renewal. I die with him and we arise together to new life. AMEN

Jesus clearly viewed himself as “a son of God” (not “the [one and only] son of God”). The truth is that Jesus was both, a social activist and a proponent of a new way of looking at religion.

    • I like the way you phrased that “a proponent of a new way’. I have stated time and time again Jesus wasn’t here to start a new religion, Paul did that, he wanted to “refocus” the one he knew the one he loved. Christians jump my ass for that one. Paul did a good thing he found a way for Gentiles, non-Jews to have a relationship with God through Jesus. A happy byproduct for many but not the end all as so many Christians treat it. There are many paths to enlightenment. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.
