This photograph was taken on September 4, 1957 as Elizabeth Eckford was prevented from entering the newly desegregated Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas by the Arkansas National Guard.

This photograph was taken on July 8, 2017 as Police Officer Darius Nash protects the Klu Klux Klan’s first amendment right to protest the removal of two statues commemorating Confederate generals in Charlottesville, VA.
What will the next image be sixty years from now? I won’t be here to see it, but I am happy to help change it, today. Are you?
“Racism is taught in our society, it is not automatic. It is learned behavior toward persons with dissimilar physical characteristics.” – Alex Haley

About ends and beginnings blog
I am a frustrated writer and poet waiting to be discovered. A stand-up philosopher performing on a street corner near you. A Christian with questions but I don’t want to hear your answers. A Buddhist with a bumper sticker on my truck to prove it. A collector of quotes. A grower of lettuce. The Patron Saint of earthworms who name their children after me. A cyclist whose big ass strains the seams of his Lycra bibs. I am American by birth, Southern by the grace of God. My goal in life is to leave an imprint on the lives of the people I love not a footprint on the earth. I am a son, a husband, a father composed of 65%-Oxygen, 18%-Carbon, 10%-Hydrogen, 3%-Nitrogen, 3%-Diet Coke and 1%-Oreo.
Still working on it. “Maybe, if we are lucky, our grand children will have an equal world.”
Maude Kilmartin Paine (my grandmother) upon being arrested for protesting for women’s and black’s right to own property, 1916 Washington, DC

An event similar to Charlottesville is being planned by the same hate groups at UF in Gainesville, Sept 12. I’ll be there. Your quote by Alex Haley is right on. I might add that what we are seeing is tribal instinct gone beserk.
