Holding it together

Waterfall 8-13-2017

My wife and I discovered this little corner of the world Sunday. Look at it. Look at everything that is going on, life, death, old, new, birth, life, ends and beginnings.

This is just one little spot, one little space, 9 square km or so of the of 510 million square km that covers our earth.

I like discovering places like this. They give me hope, hope that, believe it or not, we can survive most anything including dumb-asses like Donald Trump. If this little space, this little oasis can survive, why can’t we?

I doubt that this little waterfall has changed much in the last 10,000 years, maybe even in the last 500,000 years. I imagine strange animals drinking water from the cool pool below. Ancient humans resting near by on their journey searching for food, shelter maybe even a mate. Native Americans taking a refreshing drink from the cold mountain stream. Settlers watering their horses as they push west looking for a new beginning.

New beginnings, life is about ends and beginnings, doors closing and doors opening. Some days I feel like more doors are closing than opening then I find places like this, little spots that are holding the world together, my world together, your world together. I am happy they exist, I happy I can still find them, I am happy we can still find each other.

“I am made up of two worlds; one in which I exist to hold everyone together and the other where I watch myself constantly fall apart.” –  K. Piper

About ends and beginnings blog

I am a frustrated writer and poet waiting to be discovered. A stand-up philosopher performing on a street corner near you. A Christian with questions but I don’t want to hear your answers. A Buddhist with a bumper sticker on my truck to prove it. A collector of quotes. A grower of lettuce. The Patron Saint of earthworms who name their children after me. A cyclist whose big ass strains the seams of his Lycra bibs. I am American by birth, Southern by the grace of God. My goal in life is to leave an imprint on the lives of the people I love not a footprint on the earth. I am a son, a husband, a father composed of 65%-Oxygen, 18%-Carbon, 10%-Hydrogen, 3%-Nitrogen, 3%-Diet Coke and 1%-Oreo.

  3. My husband goes out five days a week (including in cold Canadian winters) and oil paints these common natural sights in the woods. He is (mostly) unaware of Trump’s crap as we have a politically-free home zone. I am much too aware, but try to detach and view the coming shit-storm/civil war (?) as History that we must live through, however we can, to keep ourselves sane. Your finding this utterly lovely piece of the world is a great balm and a zen moment. Thank you. You are not alone — there are millions of us out here — beyond America — that only wish you well.
