“We can never know about the days to come, But we think about them anyway” – Carly Simon
When word got out that an indictment from special counsel Robert Mueller was coming out this morning Trump’s reaction was eerily predictable, deflect, divert, and attack. In a series of five tweets Sunday with, I am sure, help from his “unofficial” press secretary Sean Hannity, Trump provided the alternative story-line to the alternate, and shrinking Deplorable universe (yes his approval numbers have dipped again across the board, even in the Fox News poll);
“Never seen such Republican ANGER & UNITY as I have concerning the lack of investigation on Clinton made Fake Dossier (now $12,000,000?) the Uranium to Russia deal, the 33,000 plus deleted Emails, the Comey fix and so much more. Instead they look at phony Trump/Russia, “collusion,” which doesn’t exist. The Dems are using this terrible (and bad for our country) Witch Hunt for evil politics, but the R’s are now fighting back like never before. There is so much GUILT by Democrats/Clinton, and now the facts are pouring out. DO SOMETHING! All of this “Russia” talk right when the Republicans are making their big push for historic Tax Cuts & Reform. Is this coincidental? NOT!”
Now, I could spend the balance of this post dissecting, dispelling, and disproving all 111 words of this rambling diatribe but why waste my breath and time. The Deplorable Nation and Fox News audience have already gut hooked the bait Trump and Hannity have dangled in front of them. The only player missing from Trump’s imaginative scenario was President Obama and he solved that this morning by adding: “Report out that Obama Campaign paid $972,000 to Fusion GPS. The firm also got $12,400,000 (really?) from DNC. Nobody knows who OK’d!”
This weekend was the perfect two days to sit on my ass and eat, drink and watch football. It was cold and rainy both days and my wife was out-of-town for one of them. I felt no guilt or shame not moving off of the sofa except to get another beer, snack or to reposition a pillow under my head.
Given the impending “doom” of the indictment, I alternated between football and the news programs Saturday. The speculation among the “fake news” channel about who would be Mullers first victim(s) was rampant but as we would all expect the State News Agency, Fox, stuck to the alternative story-line laid out by Trump and Hannity in “our” Presidents tweet storm. Fortunately there was enough good football and even better craft beer in my refrigerator that by two o’clock I let politics go and focused solely on football, Go Tigers!
Bright and early this morning we now know whose names were written on those indictments, Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Manafort’s former business associate Rick Gates. Both have been charged with 12 different counts which include conspiracy, money laundering, failing to register as foreign agents, and making false statements.
That Manafort was indicted wasn’t a very big surprise. He is about as greasy of a character as it gets and his connections to the Russians are, in a word, indisputable. The Trump team has spent the last year distancing themselves from Manafort to the point of having amnesia that he was even involved in the campaign. Who? Gates though will be a little tougher body for the Trumpets to bury given that he survived Manafort’s ouster all the way to and through Trump’s inauguration.
Let the squirming begin!
First squirm; “Sorry, but this is years ago, before Paul Manafort was part of the Trump campaign. But why aren’t Crooked Hillary & the Dems the focus?????” – Trump tweet 10-30-17
“When the President does it, that means that it’s not illegal.” – Richard Nixon
