“Being president doesn’t change who you are, it reveals who you are.” – Michelle Obama
The political conversations around Thanksgiving with my family is thankfully one-sided. With the exception of a brother in-law who knows to keep his mouth shut and his views to himself, the rest of us aren’t just anti-Trump we are “this guy is an absolute idiot”, “what a joke”, “can you believe this buffoon” anti-Trump.
It was interesting to get the anti-Trump perspective from a diverse age group from 22 to 78 years old. While the older folks were simply embarrassed by the man who was supposed to be representing our interest as the leader, the younger set was concerned about our security which ranged from financial to North Korea.
These young adults are coming out of eight years of a calm, cool-headed, intelligent leader in Barack Obama. Someone they understood. Someone they could relate to. A guy that was a Dad, told corny jokes, played basketball and wore jeans. In short, an average Joe that just happened to be the President of the United States.
Now they are experiencing the polar opposite of the average guy. A man who rants and whines. A man infatuated with himself and the power that he welds and should we ever forget just how powerful he is, is quick to remind us.
I remember the days when I was 22 and I am pretty sure I had little to no inkling about what was going on in Washington. As they say ignorance is bliss. Maybe that is a blessing. Maybe we should all hope that 22 year old’s aren’t worried about what is going on in Washington. They have enough on their plates with school, careers, etc. But here I sat, around a big dinner table listening as these kids talked about the mess they perceived “our” President was creating.
Michelle Obama nailed it, truly this job has revealed who the real Donald Trump is. Most of us just had a very small taste of who this man was if any of us watched his stupid television show or read People magazine. Certainly the folks in New York city knew first hand what we were getting ourselves into. Maybe some of the old farts in Florida knew as well but these kids had no clue. Trump wasn’t in their orbit but why would he have been?
On Friday Trump tweeted; “Time Magazine called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named “Man (Person) of the Year,” like last year, but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!” My niece, the one who attended The Women’s March in Washington, asked why I thought he would tweet this. I told her that my guess was that Time wasn’t going to name him Person of the Year and that this was Trump’s way of inflating what would have been a deflating blow to his ego. I reminded her that this was the same guy that had a fake Time magazine cover created, framed and placed in his golf clubs so there is no doubt it means something to him.
She pondered my response for a moment and then offered this very wise summation, “That’s just sad”. Yes, it is very sad and it gets sadder with each passing day.
