“I believe the Republicans have never thought that democracy was anything but a tribal myth.” – Hunter S. Thompson
Devin Nunes is the Republican Representative for California who happens to have a very important job as it pertains to the Trump/Russia investigation, he chairs the House Intelligence Committee. Devin Nunes is also, for whatever reason, one of Trump’s most loyal and obedient water boy’s.
Nunes, who appears to be a smart if not naive man, has crafted a four page document referred to by the right as The Memo (cue the thunder) which details, from Nunes’ perspective, how the federal government abuses its secret surveillance powers. Why is this important? Because the basis of much of special counsel Robert Mueller’s collusion part of the investigation is built on Trump operatives like Mike Flynn, Jared Kushner, Donald Trump Jr., Jeff Sessions, Paul Manafort, Carter Page, Roger Stone……well you get the idea, it’s a really long list, who were picked-up in calls or meetings by the FBI with Russian nationals.
What Nunes is proposing, and what Fox News and the ultra-right have sunk their teeth into is that the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the domestic intelligence and security agency of the United States charged with protecting you and I, has some kind of bias against Republican’s and specifically Donald Trump.
Nunes and other Republicans are throwing around words like “Secret Society”, “Plot”, and “Conspiracy” in describing the role of the FBI in its investigation of Trump, a conspiracy that includes, wait for it, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and former FBI Director, James Comey. The goal of this subversive plot was to prevent Donald Trump from reaching the White House. Democrat Rep. Adam Schiff describes the memo as a way to “push out a destructive narrative and further the attacks on the FBI. It’s basically a burn-the-house down strategy to protect the president.” Sounds like a plan Trump would approve of doesn’t it?
There is also a side story to all of this craziness that involves two FBI agents one of which was part of the Mueller team investigating Trump and text messages. Trey Gowdy, my Republican Representative (South Carolina) and House Oversight Committee Chairman stated that the text messages between these two FBI agents, who are also romantically linked, indicated “a level of bias that is stunning among law enforcement officers. It is manifest bias not just against Trump, but against his kids, against his business interests.”
And as we would come to expect, Trump is working hard to stroke the flame of this conspiracy to create as much smoke as possible with the help, guidance and prodding of Fox News through his Twitter account; “In one of the biggest stories in a long time, the FBI now says it is missing five months worth of lovers Strzok-Page texts, perhaps 50,000, and all in prime time. Wow!”
One of the key components of our Democracy is the Separation of Power of our three branches of government, Legislative, Executive, and Judiciary. If you have been paying attention you realize that this key element of checks and balances is under assault by our loyalty demanding, egomaniac President and for whatever reason Devin Nunes, Mark Meadows, Trey Gowdy and other conservative members of Congress are complicit with Trump in helping him destroy this country. In my mind a crime against America.
But the narrative you are going to hear from right-wing conservatives and Fox News isn’t that our Democracy is under assault but that our Freedoms are being attacked by some internal government secret resistance society organized and perpetrated by Obama and Clinton because those are the buzz words that will ignite Trump’s government hating, gun loving, paranoid deplorable base. Hunter S. Thompson would have had a field day with this lunacy.
