Woken a sleeping giant

“Hey @FLOTUS you say that your mission as First Lady is to stop cyber bullying, well then, don’t you think it would have been smart to have a convo with your step-son @DonaldJTrumpJr before he liked a post about a false conspiracy theory which in turn put a target on my back & created a safe space for people all over the world to call me and my family horrific things that constantly re-victimizes us and our community. I’m 14 I should never have had to deal with any of this and even though I thought it couldn’t get worse it has because of your family.” – Lauren Hogg, Florida shooting survivor who lost 4 friends in the massacre

I’m 14 I should never have had to deal with any of this”. I raised daughters and lived through that black hole in time known as the teenage years with both of them. They were great girls and still are and honestly very easy compared to some of the horror stories I have heard in my neighborhood. Still, even good kids have a lot going on in their life, and their bodies to make them a little crazy and hard to live with at times.

But like Ms. Hogg stated no child should have to deal with this kind of tragedy or the insane accusations being lobed at them from the likes of Donald Trump the lesser. I know first hand that American teenagers are dealing with pressures that I couldn’t have imagined when I was their age. From social pressures to academic, it is hard for today’s teenagers to just be kids. We expect too much from them which in-turn forces them to set high standards for themselves.

Maybe you know, maybe you don’t but there is a very ugly and very dark under belly to the Alt-Right movement run by a cast of characters that make Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity look like choir boys. These people spew lies, hate and spin conspiracy theories unchecked, which then get posted and shared all over the internet and everyone knows, if it’s on Twitter or Facebook it must be true.

What they are selling is fear and unfortunately they are rewarded richly for it. I don’t know if all of them actually believe the shit they are pedaling or if this is just their 8-5, a way to pay the mortgage on the beach condo and pay for their kids tuition. The problem is the millions of people out there that absorb all of this hate as the gospel, like people who still don’t believe professional wrestling is fake. Yes, they do exist.

What Ms. Hogg is commenting about above is a conspiracy theory being disseminated by the Alt-Right that some, including herself, of the student survivors of the Parkland school massacre are paid “crisis actors”, people paid to protest during a crisis. Donald Trump the lesser apparently agrees with this theory because he “liked” someones tweet spreading this horrible lie.

I really am sorry and sad these kids are having to deal with this. Honestly they have enough on their plates just being kids. But I am proud of them and what Trump, Washington, the Republicans and the NAR are beginning to realize is that they have woken a sleeping giant, kids that have experienced something no one should have to live through. Kids that have had bullets from an AR-15 fired at them. Kids that have buried their friends and their teachers. Kids that will never be the same again. Kids determined to change the narrative of this country. Kids like yours and mine.

  1. William Tell says:

Two points of dissent. (1) Ms. Hogg should have addressed her remarks to the offending man directly, not his step-mother. This is 2018, after all. (2) I really don’t believe today’s teens face anything worse than did my generation. Clearly, some face worse than others. But as I recall a psychologist telling an auditorium full of church youth workers, “The only thing you can tell them is, it gets better.” That matches my, and my friends’, story.

  2. I’d venture to say, that sadly, their childhoods ended that day and they now have to navigate a world they are ill prepared to face. But OMG am I proud of the raised voices, the willingness to wake up to the challenge of surviving / making change.
