“Chicken Little likes to walk in the woods. She likes to look at the trees. She likes to smell the flowers. She likes to listen to the birds singing. One day while she is walking an acorn falls from a tree, and hits the top of her little head. My, oh, my, the sky is falling. I must run and tell the lion about it, says Chicken Little and begins to run.”
Last night Rachel Maddow spent half of her hour-long program running through the long list of corruption, excessive spending and just general craziness of EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt. Why this guy is even still in Washington only Donald Trump knows.
Meanwhile on Fox News, Sean Hannity was talking about the hoards of people attempting to cross the Mexican/American border carrying crime and drugs in their backpacks and raping all the women they came into contact with along the way. In response, Trump wants to send 2,000 to 4,000 National Guard troops to protect our southern border from these supposed “caravans” of immigrants.
The difference between Trump supporters and those of us that aren’t is contained within these two news stories.
What Trump and Hannity are doing is manufacturing a catastrophe, a national crisis so Trump can demonstrate his power, his authority and his strength. There is no emergency that requires Trump to call out 2,000 to 4,000 National Guard, who were his second choice when the defense department turned down his request to send the Marines or the Army to “protect” our border. As CNN noted, Trump “often acts like a President touting a solution in search of a problem” and this Fox News instigated “calamity” is a prime example of the way Trump governs to appeal to his base.
Yesterday at a West Virginia roundtable that was supposed to be on tax reform, Trump veered sharply off topic telling his adoring fans that “Women are being raped at levels we’ve never seen before” at the Mexican border. This soundbite, as most of Trumps soundbites, has no facts and certainly no proof. But Fox News will grab this “fairy tale” and Sean Hannity will polish this turd until it shines like a gold nugget so Trumps base can share it on Facebook with the other Deplorables to justify their support of him. As Chico Marx noted; “Who ya gonna believe, me or your own eyes?”
In the meantime, another Trump cabinet member waste millions of taxpayer dollars, abuses their authority, and is a party to both corruption and cronyism and for whatever reason it isn’t a big deal. What is going on with EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt is not a fairy tale, nor is it fake news. The facts and the proof are concrete. Hell even Fox News, whose Ed Henry grilled Pruitt hard for 25 minutes, knows that Pruitt is a slimy piece of shit that needs to go. But still Pruitt remains. Why? Because he represents another example of the lack of governance and lack of control of the Trump administration and if they fire him, one of many, it is another admission of just how screwed-up things are in this White House.
Chicken Little tried to convince everyone that the sky was falling. So are Trump and Hannity. The problem is with all of Trumps boneheaded moves of late he might just get his wish and the sky really will begin to fall. The question is how will he react to something that is real and serious rather than something he fabricates in his mind? Remember, this is the same guy who fires people on twitter rather than to their face. What does that tell you about his backbone, his courage and his resolve?
