“For those who missed the GOP outrage today: Barron Trump was ripped from his mother’s grasp and placed into detention in another state and might now be put up for adoption. Oh. Wait. No. That’s thousands of other children.” – Siva Vaidhyanathan
“A minor child deserves privacy and should be kept out of politics. Pamela Karlan, you should be ashamed of your very angry and obviously biased public pandering, and using a child to do it.” – Melania Trump

I spent a lot of time in the car yesterday so I got to listen to most of the impeachment hearing including Ms. Karlan’s very clever use of Barron Trump’s name to make the point that his “Dad” was not, and is not, despite what he believes, King of the United States.
What I learned yesterday is very clear, the Republicans don’t have shit. The simple truth is this, if Trump is truly innocent and his call to Ukraine President was “perfect” as he likes to say then it would make sense for him to allow acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Energy Secretary Rick Perry, former national security adviser John Bolton and probably at least a dozen White House and National Security Council staffers to testify. All of these individuals could clear up, one way or another, the essential question of whether the president was truly interested in corruption in Ukraine, or whether withholding military aid and dangling of a White House meeting was motivated by his personal and political interest.
The Republicans want Fact Witnesses, well there is the list. These guys plus there texts, emails and other corroborating documents would be all of the direct evidence, like Trumps tax returns, the Republicans would need to prove Trumps innocence. But that isn’t going to happen. Why? Because Trump, Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson, and all of these Republican stooges know that he is guilty as hell. So why do they continue to defend this corrupt slime ball? The only reason I can come-up with is that they are afraid Trump will send out a mean tweet about them.
Carl Sandburg said; “If the facts are against you, argue the law. If the law is against you, argue the facts. If the law and the facts are against you, pound the table and yell like hell”. For the last three years Trump, the White House, the Republican party and Fox News have been pounding the table and yelling like hell because that’s all they got. Russian collusion? Pound the table and yell like hell. Release tax returns? Pound the table and yell like hell. Build the wall? Pound the table and yell like hell. Extort Ukraine? Pound the table and yell like hell.
The fake outrage being created over Barron Trump is just more pounding the table and yelling like hell. It’s funny that Melania all of the sudden found her “twitter voice” when things got a little too close to home for her. But where was her outrage when her “husband” was separating children from their parents and locking them up in cages? Where is her outrage as her “husband” takes away SNAP benefits from hungry children? Where is her outrage when her “husband” bully’s the shit out of everyone and anyone that disagrees with him? Be Best my ass.
Congress will impeach Trump and the Senate, more than likely, won’t convict unless a few Senators grow some hair on their chest and a set of balls. But there will be a trial, a very public trial and Trump hates a trial and he will really hate this one. He loves to boast that he never settles but he does and he has. The two most recent ones are Trump University ($25 million) and the Trump Foundation ($2 million). The only way he can settle this trial is to resign. Short of that we need to prepare ourselves for a real spectacle and a lot of table pounding and yelling like hell.
It’s gonna be Must See TV!

As usual, a superb and on-point post that eloquently puts into words what many of us are thinking.

Wiktionary calls it “an old legal aphorism” and quotes a more rhythmic version:
“If you have the facts on your side, pound the facts. If you have the law on your side, pound the law. If you have neither on your side, pound the table.”
No matter how it’s said, it certainly applies to a lot of former Republicans (now Trumpists) in the House and Senate.
