“I’m being killed financially. This money is because they hate my guts.”- Lindsey Graham on Fox & Friends 9-25-20
I called Lindsey Graham’s office to comment about Lindsey’s whining on Fox & Friends this morning. I told the young man that answered the phone, an obvious current or former member of the Furman University Young Republicans Club, that the reason Lindsey’s donations had dried-up is because he had quit working for South Carolina. Young Republican began reading from the script about all Graham has done for the state. When he finished, I said that was a list of what Lindsey had done in the past, for the last three years Graham has worked tirelessly not for South Carolina but for Trump.
This gave Young Republican the opening he was looking for; “So this about Trump not Senator Graham. You hate Trump. You hate that Senator Graham supports our President.” No, I told him, I hate that Lindsey choose Trump over us, the citizens of South Carolina. Funny, that shut him up.
Once upon a time I agreed with Lindsey as much as I disagreed with him. Hell, I have even voted for him a time or three because I knew, despite all his hysterics, drama, and contorted facial expressions, he had our states best interest in mind. But for whatever reason and there is a lot of speculation about those reasons, all that ended three years ago.
I had a locksmith come out to one of our properties yesterday. He looked like what you would expect a craftsman to look like, dressed head to toe in Carhartt. Now the assumption we would all make in this day and age is a white, working class guy driving a Ford truck would be conservative, a Republican and a Trump supporter. Mr. Locksmith saw the Biden sticker on my car and said, “I like your sticker where you get it?” I told him and asked, “Are you voting for Joe Biden?”. Yup, he replied and Jamie Harrison too, that’s the guy running against Lindsey Graham. Mr. Locksmith told me he wouldn’t make the same mistake twice. What mistake was that I asked? Voting for Trump or Graham!
What he told me later was a real “oh shit” moment for me. Mr. Locksmith said that even though we don’t talk about it, or ride around with Biden stickers on our cars, we are tired of “Trump’s shit” too. He said he was tired of all of Trumps tweeting but what really upset him was the ugliness, the name calling and the disrespect mentioning, specifically John McCain. When I asked him who “we” are he said my neighbors, my friends, some of the people I go to church with.
Lindsey said this morning that people hated his guts. I am not sure what “people” Lindsay is talking about, but I am sure of this, the reason anyone would hate his guts is because of his undying, unwavering devotion to Trump. Will Jamie Harrison beat him in November? At this point I think it is a toss-up, but Lindsey has the edge because I can’t imagine the Bubba’s in Florence, or Sumter, or Pickens voting for Biden or for Harrison, a black man. Lindsey will probably ride Trump’s coattails in South Carolina back to Washington hopefully without a Trump second term.
I firmly believe that Trump will go down in history as the most polarizing, the most divisive, the dumbest and least prepared president this country has ever had. I would also venture to guess that history will view him as one of the most hated politicians this country has ever produced.
I realize that hate is a strong word and certainly a very strong emotion. But I also believe this with all my heart, Trump hates me. Trump hates me because I don’t buy his bullshit. Trump hates me because I don’t wear his red baseball cap or fly his flag. Trump hates me because I don’t fawn all over him. Trump hates me which makes it even easier to hate him back. Today, the list of most hated includes gems like Adolf Hitler, Osama bin Laden, and Saddam Hussein. Has Trump done enough to make the list? Only time will tell.
