Daylight giving back time

“I don’t mind going back to daylight saving time. With inflation, the hour will be the only thing I’ve saved all year.” –  Victor Borge

This Sunday is Daylight Savings Time or as I like to call it, Daylight Giving Back Time. It is when we “Spring Forward” rather than “Fall Back” and I can’t wait.

It is funny, Daylight Giving Back Time snuck up on me this year. I didn’t realize it was this weekend until I heard the weather lady talking about it last night. But once I heard my mind began to race with all the “fun” projects I could not only start but actually finish in a day or two rather than stretched over a Saturday here or there.

I hate hibernating and that is what I have been doing since the end of October. I am a sunshine guy, a daylight guy. I have stuff I want to do, ride my bicycle in the afternoon, projects around my house, all things that don’t necessarily require warmth but do require light, specifically sunlight.

The extension of sunlight starts slow, a little each day until June 21st which is the day we will have the most daylight. After June 21st we begin to lose a minute or two each day and then on November 5th the hibernation starts all over again.

I have the same enthusiasm for Daylight Giving Back Time today as I had as an eight year old. The difference, as an eight year old I would spend all of my waking hours playing and exploring in the creek in my backyard. As a 56-year-old, I don’t have a creek to play in. But if I did I would certainly spend a little bit of the precious daylight turning over rocks looking for frog eggs, crawdads, and salamanders. When I am hiking and I pass a stream I can’t help but pause and turn over a rock or two. Old habits die-hard.

Enjoy the daylight. Enjoy overdoing it in the yard or doing nothing at all. Watch the world stay awake for a couple of extra hours each evening. Let the sun warm your skin from months of cold. Notice how the trees stir slowly sprouting leaves that unfold on dark branches and how the brown grass turns green carpeting the world with a backdrop of color. These are simple pleasures, but remember we are simple creatures

“An extra yawn one morning in the springtime, an extra snooze one night in the autumn is all that we ask in return for dazzling gifts. We borrow an hour one night in April; we pay it back with golden interest five months later.” – Winston Churchill

Here in Queensland there is no daylight saving and I have to do my morning ride by headlight. Round here we have early morning joggers and their dogs, an ocassional Koala or wallaby and sometimes snakes, so cycling in the dark is fraught with adventure.
