On the technology struggle bus

I had to order a new laptop today to replace my “old-new” six-year old laptop. Six years doesn’t seem that long to me but apparently in technology years it is equal to 100 at least that is what the kid at Dell insinuated. He asked me what I had now and I said a Dell. When he wanted more specifics I said a silver one. He really liked that answer.

There really isn’t anything major wrong with my “old-new” laptop, it’s slow sure, the B key sticks, the battery only stays charged for 15 minutes, oh yeah and the power cord is taped to the side to keep it from moving around. Other than all of that hell it runs great.

When I had my own company I was the “Technology Guy”. I bought the computers, software and other hardware. I even setup and maintained our website. Then when I sold my company and became an employee there was an IT guy, a snot nose kid who treated me like I was a technology caveman.

So what makes ordering a computer today different than it was six years ago, choices. Too many damn choices to be exact. 7th generation, 6th or 5th. Windows 10, or 8 or 5. 8GB or 12GB. 1 TB or hell I don’t even know what a TB is. I thought that stood for Tuberculosis. Apparently it didn’t take me long to lose my technology mojo. I am pretty sure it didn’t take years just weeks.

So after a series of questions from the Dell guy he told me what I needed for the next six years. Whatever it is (I know it is silver) it should show up on my doorsteps in 3-5 business days. And then the real fun begins, trying to figure out how to get six years of important stuff off my “old-new” laptop onto my new one. Please, please don’t tell me to just store it on the cloud like my kids have. I don’t know where that cloud is, where it has been or who else is going to use it. And, guess what, I don’t want to know.

So to all you technology wizards out there can you use a nail gun, skill saw, a miter box, a router, a jointer or a planer? Yea I didn’t think so. I will stick with my caveman tools and let the technology wave wash someone else away.

    My laptop is 8 years old and barely running. I am probably less tech savvy than you are so after you receive your new laptop and figure out how to get all those years of information transferred over, could you do me a favor and let me know how you did it? I think a blog piece on how you did it would be wonderful (I would insert an exclamation point here but that key no longer works).

Yes I can. if you use a different operating system from the old puter to the new one, you are going to HAVE to send it all to the cloud. it is no longer a simple matter of downloading everything onto a drive and then uploading to the new puter. Systems rarely speak to each other anymore and you will end up with garbage instead of photos, letters, books, etc.

      Your may be right, Suze, but if his 10,000 words has been done in MS Word, I would think he could transfer it to a CD and then copy it into the new computer … providing, of course, he puts MS Word on the new computer. 🙂

      The “cloud” is probably the best solution overall, but even I’m not all that familiar with how it works and I’m fairly computer-savvy. I should probably learn because my computer is about four years old now (altho’ it’s still performing like a champ). I really hate the idea of having to replace it because I Do Not Like Win 10 (I have Win7 Pro).

    I can empathize and likewise that cloud thing is a question mark. The good news is if you have any problems just call the CIA or FBI according to Wikileaks. I think my old legal pads may be safe.
