I was going through a weeks worth of Trump’s tweets to see what I missed. The answer? Nothing really.
As I noted in my last post, my youngest was in town for a week and her boyfriend flew-in on Thursday. Friday we headed for the mountains, with my oldest daughter in tow without her husband and my grand-dog who got a pass for work, for a weekend long celebration with my family. This year we had one new husband, one new fiancé, two new boyfriends and we were missing a nephew and a soon to be ex-brother-in-law. In short, a house overflowing with family and friends.
We are a loud and very opinionated group. Fortunately our political opinions all flow in the same direction and if one of the new people or husbands has a different view they are usually smart enough to bite their tongue or change rooms. I can promise, you don’t want to feel the icy stare of disgust from my middle sister. Shit it scares me.
The oldest grandchild is 29, the youngest 23. Of the six all but two have advance degrees with one of those two headed in that direction in May. They are smart, successful in their fields of work and study and obviously very good-looking.
All have been raised to be compassionate with other people and passionate about the causes that interest them. Some have marched in Washington, others are focused on sustainability, all understand the word help and the power of reaching down to pull someone else up.
My parents and I were sitting together out on the lawn watching the interaction of everyone else on the crowded porch. My Dad, God love him, likes to recount all the “successes” he has had in life to anyone that will listen. He was waxing poetically about some Bill he authored in the House of Representatives when I interrupted him, I had already heard the story a hundred times. I said “Dad, all those plaques and certificates you have hanging on the wall in the garage don’t mean shit compared to what you and Mom created on that crowed porch.” He said “Yea, yea I know but this Bill….” and I said “That Bill will be long forgotten after you are dead and gone. As a matter of fact I can bet you are the only person on this earth reminiscing about it right now. But on that porch are two generations that owe their existence to you and Mom and in a couple of years there will be a third and after that a fourth and fifth. Maybe that Bill did some good things but those people up there will do a hell of a lot more.”
So what did I miss from the mouth and thumbs of Trump? Nothing. I have come to realize that sure he can screw things up now. Hell, maybe they stayed screwed up for ten years or so. But ten years is a drop in the bucket compared to what is in front of us. As I have said before, when historians write about the Trump presidency it will be just a sad little footnote in the history of this great country. Generations after, my kids and grand-kids, will look back and wonder what the hell were we thinking to elect such a buffoon. The answer to that question is easy, some of us weren’t thinking. I am just glad so many young, fresh minds are paying attention. I celebrated with them this past weekend and I can tell each of you it is going to be okay.
My immediate answer upon seeing your question, “Absolutely nothing, SOS”. Welcome back, glad you had a good reunion with family. Oh, by the way…Kim is playing with nukes again, Justice Kennedy is retiring, Cohen is ready to flip, trump will be licking Putin boots in Helsinki, stock market is dropping, Sarah was asked to leave the Red Hen, government doesn’t know how to reunite kids and mothers, tens of thousands marched on Saturday and the Rays are on a winning streak…..and, locally, a high school student running for the county school board outed himself. HOOOOOAH. Anybody got a problem with that?

I can’t quite bring myself to share your optimism. At least, not yet. I really hope you’re right, though.

I believe you should. And have one for me. No, I don’t drink so you can have yours and mine. Cheers.

You know, dear Mr. Legend…you are truly a wise man, whether you believe it yourself or not. Maybe in future, Trump will get more than a foot-note. To remind us all, like another period in history ‘this NEVER again’.
